The Golden Ratio in E-Commerce Advertising

Written by Allen Abbott | Jun 7, 2017 12:50:00 PM

The Golden Ratio is a mathematical ratio found by dividing a line into two parts so that the longer part divided by the smaller part is also equal to the whole length divided by the longer part. It fosters organic and natural looking compositions that are aesthetically pleasing to the eye. In nature, the golden ratio is often used for the arrangement of leaves or flowers. In architecture, the presence of the golden ratio provides a sense of balance and equilibrium. But how exactly does the golden ratio apply to E-commerce marketing?

Introduction

The golden ratio described simply “exists when a line is divided into two parts and the longer part (a) divided by the smaller part (b) is equal to the sum of (a) + (b) divided by (a), which both equal 1.618.” ¹ The ratio is often found in nature, shown frequently in the shape of a shell, but artists, architects and designers use this proportion to achieve beautiful, harmonious, and appealing work like the Parthenon.

So what does the golden ratio have to with E-commerce marketing if it’s a mathematical equation and the basis for aesthetically pleasing art? Quite a lot if you think about it. Imagine that the customer experience is the line, and each marketing message must play a part in delivering a seamless and satisfying experience.
